This Time, I Was the Bride
/Turning 47 was never about having a big birthday party.
I wanted to create an experience — to bring together good friends, beautiful places, good food and a little time to celebrate myself.
After years of planning weddings for other people, I decided to plan something for myself.
My friends arrived in Bali from Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Yogyakarta, which meant managing different flights, delays and driver arrangements — something that felt very familiar as a wedding planner!
Our first evening was a welcome dinner at Kekeb Restaurant in Nusa Dua. Behind the scenes, I was still coordinating with the MUA, photographer, decorator, venue and villa team.
It felt like planning an event all over again.
Except this time, I was the guest of honour.
The days that followed were a mix of villa time, spa, good food, laughter, beautiful Bali moments and a meaningful melukat purification ritual in Ubud.
The melukat was probably one of the most special moments for me. At 47, I feel I'm entering a different chapter of life — one where I am more comfortable with who I am, what I want and what I no longer need to carry.
There was also plenty of fun — from Mulia Sky Bar to exploring Bali and simply enjoying time with friends.
Looking back, what made this birthday special wasn't the location or the details.
It was the people.
And perhaps the biggest lesson for me was learning to step away from being the planner for a moment and simply enjoy the experience.
For most of my career, I've been the person behind the scenes — making sure everyone else has a memorable celebration.
This time, I created one for myself.
At 47, I'm grateful for the freedom to design my own life, choose my people, travel, explore and celebrate the woman I've become.
So here's to 47.
This time, I was the bride.
